Discovery of 1323 s pulsations from RX J 0103 . 6 − 7201 : the longest period X - ray pulsar in the SMC ⋆

چکیده
XMM-Newton archival observations of the Be/X-ray binary candidate RX J0103.6−7201 revealed pulsations with a period of ∼1323 s. This makes RX J0103.6−7201 the X-ray pulsar with the longest period known in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). More than 150 X-ray observations of RX J0103.6−7201 by ROSAT, Chandra and XMM-Newton show flux variations by a factor of 50 on time scales of days to years. Using the accurate positions obtained from ACIS-I images the optical counterpart is identified with a V = 14.6 mag emission line star. EPIC spectra of RX J0103.6−7201 above 1 keV are consistent with an absorbed power-law with column density between (6−9)×10 cm, except during one observation when an extraordinary high value of 1.1×10 cm was measured which strongly attenuated the power-law emission below 3 keV. A soft excess between 0.5 and 1.0 keV is evident in the spectra which becomes best visible in the highly absorbed spectrum. The soft component can be reproduced by a thermal plasma emission model with its luminosity strongly correlated with the total intrinsic source luminosity. Including results from three other SMC Be/X-ray binaries extends the linear correlation over three orders of magnitude in source intensity, strongly suggesting that the same mechanism is responsible for the generation of

X - ray observations of Be / X - ray binaries in the SMC ⋆
Fifteen Be/X-ray binaries and candidates in the SMC were observed serendipitously with the EPIC instruments of XMM-Newton during two observations of SNR 0047-73.5 and SNR 0103-72.6 in October 2000. A total of twelve of those sources are detected. For eleven of them an accurate position and in part detection of X-ray pulsations support the proposed identification as Be/X-ray binaries. In one cas...
متن کاملDiscovery of pulsations from the Be / X - ray binary RX J 0101 . 3 − 7211 in the SMC by XMM - Newton ⋆
We report pulsations in the X-ray flux of RXJ0101.3−7211 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) with a period of (455 ± 2) s in XMM-Newton EPIC-PN data. The X-ray spectrum can be described by a power-law with a photon index of 0.6±0.1. Timing analysis of ROSAT PSPC and HRI archival data confirms the pulsations and indicates a period increase of ∼ 5 s since 1993. RXJ0101.3−7211 varied in brightness...
متن کاملDiscovery of the Slowest X-Ray Pulsar in the SMC, AX J0049.5−7323, with ASCA
The discovery of coherent pulsations with ASCA from an X-ray source, AX J0049.5−7323, is reported. The barycentric period was determined to be 755.5± 0.6 s, which is the longest among X-ray pulsators in the SMC. The X-ray spectrum has been found to be unchanged through ASCA observations, with a photon index of ∼ 0.8 and a luminosity of ∼ 5× 10 erg s (0.7–10 keV). Archival data of the Einstein a...
متن کاملDiscovery of Pulsed X-rays from the Smc Transient Rx J0052.1-7319
Coherent 65 mHz pulsations in the X-ray flux of the Small Magellantic Cloud (SMC) transient source RX J0052.1-7319 have been detected by us in an analysis of ROSAT data. We report on the pulsations we detected in ROSAT HRI data and simultaneous detection of these pulses in hard X-rays using BATSE data. The BATSE data show an outburst of the source lasting 60 days. We report on optical observati...
متن کاملDiscovery of an X - Ray Pulsar in the SMC : AX J 0058 − 7203
We report on the discovery and analysis of an X-ray pulsar, AX J0058−7203, in the Small Magellanic Cloud. This pulsar exhibits coherent pulsations at P = 280.3 s with a double-peak structure. The X-ray spectrum is well fitted with a simple power-law model of photon index Γ ∼ 0.7. No significant change of the pulsation period over the observation was found. A comparison with ROSAT observations i...
